What To Do In The First Fifteen Minutes
Before anyone gets there, these steps limit the damage and protect your claim.
- Get people and pets out from under it. Wet ceiling drywall fails suddenly and heavily.
- Kill power to the affected area at the breaker if water is anywhere near fixtures or outlets.
- Catch and contain. Buckets, towels, a tarp over furniture you cannot move.
- Relieve a bulging ceiling. A small hole at the low point of a sagging bulge drains it in a controlled way and can save the whole ceiling. Stand to the side, not underneath.
- Photograph everything before you clean up. Interior damage, exterior damage, standing water, damaged contents. Timestamped photos are what an adjuster pays on.
- Do not get on the roof. Wet roofs kill people every year in this state. That is our job.

How much does emergency tarping cost?
Typically $400 to $1,200 depending on roof size, pitch, how much area needs covering and access conditions. On a covered claim, emergency mitigation is generally reimbursable — insurers expect you to prevent further damage, and most policies require it. Keep the receipt.
Will my insurance cover emergency roof repair?
Usually, when the cause is a covered peril such as wind, hail or a falling tree. Most policies also obligate you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, which is exactly what emergency tarping is. Document everything and keep all receipts.
Can you tarp a roof in the rain?
Often, yes — it depends on pitch, wind and whether lightning is present. We will not put a crew on a roof during an active lightning storm or in conditions where the footing is unsafe. When we cannot go up, we work on interior containment until we can.
Do I need to be home for emergency service?
For exterior stabilization, not necessarily — we can tarp and secure with your authorization by phone. For interior inspection and leak tracing, someone needs to provide access.
